The Poggio Stenti estate is situated in the heart of the production area of MONTECUCCO SANGIOVESE DOCG and MAREMMA TOSCANA DOC, on the alluvial terraces of the Orcia river, 1km from Montenero d’Orcia, where the hills slope down from Monte Amiata towards the Maremma, and a few hundred meters as the crow flies from the border of the territory of Montalcino. The winery’s viticultural heritage consists of just over 5hectares of vineyards, of which about 4 are Sangiovese, 1 Vermentino, and about 0.25 Cabernet Sauvignon.
The cultivation area is located in a hilly area, favorable for viticulture, the soils are clayey, structured and calcareous, poorly endowed with organic matter, deep and very rich in mineral elements. In these soils, the vine is able to produce concentrated and ripe grapes, self-regulating the production load and ensuring the achievement of high standards of polyphenolic richness. Thanks also to the favorable climate, the viticulture is managed with the utmost respect for the environment and with the minimum impact of the production processes on it. The use of synthetic agrochemicals has been eliminated and the fight against the main parasites in the vineyard is mainly based on the use of copper and sulfur, natural substances which are well-known by winemakers and have always been part of the knowledge of our territory.
Poggio Stenti vinifies, ages and bottles the entire production, thanks to a small, but very well organized winery, where the technological availability (refrigerating system, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, soft press) allows to treat also white grapes and those destined to the production of the rosé. In recent years, the company has been growing a lot also in the selection of new wood for the aging of its best Sangiovese grapes and is increasingly moving towards a traditional use of FRENCH OAK BARRELS 20 HL LARGE of the highest quality, giving to its wines more elegance and finesse compared to alternative methods, such as 225-liter barrels.
